Love Actually...in College

He’s just not that into you. Or is he? College dating life is so puzzling to me—if that’s what you could even call it. Everyone has such a separate agenda and just when you think you’ve found something special, the magic carpet you were riding on always seems to disappear. So many of my friends tell me a new story every week; one week their relationship is going great and the next, they’ve been side-slapped with a quick “sorry” and a pathetic drop-off. But on the flip side, college can be a time of blossoming romance;  where you learn that maybe true love does exist after all and that there is that perfect person for you.
So how can we be happy with these love tides of high and low?
1. Go on fun dates: College seems to be a lot of casual dating so we might as well make the most of it! Explore all of the trendy and classic restaurants in your college town or go to a local amusement park. If you’re looking for some new ideas, check out www.goldstar.com for local events in your area!
2. Hang out in a group: This can make it more comfortable when you’re testing the waters and getting to know someone. I’ve recently read that you’re most likely to meet that special someone from a mutual friend, so ask a friend to plan a group date. Worst case scenario: you'll have some more Facebook friends.
3. Have a life: Dating and having a relationship is only a part of the college experience—it is not the end all, be all. Make sure you experience everything your college has to offer; join clubs, take interesting classes—don’t be afraid to say yes to new opportunities for fear of your relationship. That makes you a more interesting person to date anyway!
4. Find balance: Any relationship should be a give and take. You’re likely to burn out if you’re the one always waiting by the phone; it’s too vulnerable of a position to be in and you’ll feel more volatile than versatile. So put down that phone and let them come to you.
5. Do the unexpected: You have to take chances to have a fun and exciting relationship. Sure, it’s a risk you take, but if your partner has a bad reaction, then it probably isn’t meant to be in the first place. So, show up with hot cocoa when they’re studying late at night or have a pizza anonymously ordered to their place. Sweet surprises are the best!
I hope this will add some extra happiness to your present dating life, whether you’re single, ready to mingle, or in a serious relationship. Remember first and foremost that you are an independent person and that you create your own happiness; someone else can only add to it. Happy dating then, guys and gals!
Keep shining,
