Where the Heart Is

Yesterday was such a lovely Thanksgiving. I hope that you had the best day--whatever a best day means for you. For me that meant family, delicious food, and a couple rounds of a hilarious board game. Yesterday was a pleasant reminder of how special family really is. As we gathered around the table last night, we each said something we were thankful for. I don't think that there was one of us who didn't say they were thankful for family. In our family, it is so nice to know that family will always be there for you, no matter what. And they'll certainly be there for a good laugh. Especially with my dad in the picture.
Family is constantly changing; babies are born and grandparents pass. Hopefully in that order with no losses in between. But the traditions remain the same (that cranberry jello mold just never quits!) and the spirit of our family leaves a legacy with each passing generation.
Family is such a blessing and such a great source of happiness. In a way though, it's hard for me to write about it. After interviewing many teens, I realize that home may not always be where the heart is. And that is okay. While it may seem sad that we don't all have great relationships with our loved ones, I have seen teens draw their support elsewhere. I think it's important to remember that we are never alone. Whether we have a close bond with our family or not, we can always draw on the love of friends and mentors for support.
No matter who you spent your Thanksgiving with, I hope it was a happy one.
Keep shining,
The Sunny Girl, Lauren Cook
