As I was brainstorming what to write today, thinking about the happiness in music, I quickly changed my thought process. My dad announced to me this morning that the death count in Japan is over 10,000 now. Officials are saying that it is Japan’s worst crisis since World War II, and as you have probably seen from the pictures, I highly doubt that this is an understatement. Can you imagine? Suddenly not only having a home anymore, but trying to survive without food and water while the threat of a nuclear explosion lingers? Let alone the whereabouts of your family?
One of our family friends has family in Japan and she said that she still hasn’t been able to get ahold of them. As I sit here thinking about her and her family, it is overwhelming to think about the devastation that too many people are facing, both in Japan and wherever their family may be.
It could have happened to anyone. Earthquakes aren’t discriminatory—even though they do seem to have a special fondness for Japan and California. You never know when it could strike and we never could have predicted that this particular earthquake and its ensuing tsunami would wreak so much havoc on Japan. It is hard to imagine how challenging the situation there must be but the best thing that we can do is educate ourselves and care enough about others to help in whatever way we can.
It seems silly to write about the notions of happiness today. I’ll be back to my cheery self soon but for today, I want to emphasize the importance of gratitude and giving back. May we be thankful for the blessings that we have today and in this moment, and may we help those that are suffering.
