Click here to play the symphony: Mr. Holland\'s Symphony. Today I thought I'd switch it up a little and discuss a movie of the week rather than a book of the week. I was flipping channels and I just happened to land on Mr. Holland's Opus. Even though it was made 15 years ago, that movie continues to have so much meaning to me. I saw it when I was a little girl and it has stayed with me ever since. Richard Dreyfuss does a brilliant job as the music teacher of Kennedy High School and I think overall, this movie earns a wealth of happiness points for its messages on mentoring, music, and the importance of family.
Mr. Holland is an inspiration to all of his students. The ending is especially touching (I won't ruin it for you!) But sharing your passion with others, the way he shared his passion for music with his students, brings so much joy to life that is everlasting and fulfilling. This movie touched my heart and inspired me to try to help others the way Mr. Holland did.
Also, music is a major element of this film. Beginning in the 1960s and ending in the 1990s, it is entertaining to listen and see the changes in music and culture. I know music gives me an insurmountable amount of happiness and I'm constantly listening to it or singing along with it. In the car, while ironing, or when I'm out with my friends--music is ever present in my life. Music offers us an abundance of bliss; the rhythm, the lyrics, the voice--music embodies every aspect of life. Doesn't music make you happy?
Lastly, this movie is so heart-warming because of Mr. Holland's relationship with his son. Ironically, his son is deaf and can never hear his father's greatest passion. This leads to a disjointed relationship between father and son but by the end of the film, their bond is so encouraging. When Mr. Holland dedicates a song to his son, you might as well call in the plumber.
If you have some free time, rent this movie! It is a surefire ticket to happiness. I can't promise that you won't cry (I know I did!) but I promise that these are only happy tears and that you will be delighted by what this movie has to offer. In the meantime, listen to some of your favorite songs today for an extra happiness boost!
