Smiling in the Slopes

The winter blues are a thing of the past. Sure, the sun might not be shining as brightly and it may be a little chillier outside, but this winter weather is a perfect opportunity to get our happiness high again. As I sit in a mountain cabin after two days of skiing and snowmobiling, I’ve never loved this winter season more. And more than just the snow and sledding, I think the best part is the adventure.
We are so much happier when we challenge ourselves—whether we’re in the snow or the sun (which there has been plenty of this season surprisingly!). I think we can be so much happier when we enjoy what this season offers. There’s nothing like getting out in nature and celebrating what this natural world provides. It’s such a freeing feeling to get some fresh air, some natural sunlight, and some good fun.
And even though it might be a little frightening to try something new (not all of us snowboard black diamonds every weekend—including myself), it’s such a great feeling of accomplishment when you are able to finish the day in one piece—preferably with a smile on your face. Even if it’s trekking through the bunny slopes, facing your fears can offer some of our greatest moments of happiness. Sure, there were times when I thought I might die if that snowmobile didn’t turn just right and of course I took a few falls on the slopes, but that was part of the adventure. Knowing that you can take a little risk, while still being careful, is such an exhilarating feeling.
I encourage you to get out and enjoy this winter season! That is one of the many great things about California; you can go surfing at the beach and within hours hit the mountains to frolic in the snow. Yes, I just said “frolic.” The point is that you have some novel fun; do something that you don’t normally do. It might be a little nerve-wracking for you to try something new or to pick something up after a long period of time but as long as you have confidence in yourself, you’ll find that you are able to keep up in no time. Like riding a bike.
And be sure to go with your friends and family. For some people it is a tradition to go to the mountains, but if you’re like me, it’s a bit of a rarity. Having familiar and friendly faces to help you acclimate to a new world is a comforting feeling when you’re trying to be a little dare-devil. Plus, we all need a buddy to sip hot cocoa with and pick us up when we fall (there were multiple times I snowballed down the mountain).
I hope I see you on the slopes soon! Let’s enjoy the sunshine and the snow!
Keep shining,
The Sunny Girl, Lauren Cook
