Sunny Star: Alex Castillo

Some people come into your life and leave a lasting impression. Alex Castillo is one of those people. A highly motivated yet freshly funny guy, Alex is always onto a new adventure. Which is why he started his blog, “Adventures with Alex” chronicling his travels and fascinating experiences. I hope Alex’s adventures will inspire you to make some of your own. I think we are so much happier when we explore life outside of our small world and realize that it is indeed a big, big world.

1. Can you tell us about your blog, “Adventures with Alex?”

Adventures with Alex really just started as a way to document my travels over the summer. I've always enjoyed travel, food, and writing, so I figured why not weave them all together? My blog has grown quite a bit since I've started it and it's become an excellent avenue to post short stories, food reviews, and travel advice/mishaps. I still enjoy documenting my college years for my own fulfillment but my blog is also a great means of chronicling the variety of writing pieces I've done.

2. How has traveling added to your happiness?

I can't be in one place for very often and I've always been fascinated by other cultures, places, and people. Traveling is difficult but I like the challenge. Each place you visit has different idiosyncrasies and quirks. And it's a matter of understanding those challenges and overcoming them. I personally think that's the best part travel. And trying new food of course.

3. What is your happiest memory from traveling?

I loved my time in Colombia this past summer. I was there as a part of an bi-national research project regarding economic reform in the region. But in my off time, I was able to explore. We went salsa dancing, tried traditional Colombia cuisine, and even went to a Colonial village outside the city (Medellin). But my favorite memory was when I took the city gondola to the top of Andes Mountains with my Colombian friend just as the sunset was peeking through. It was just us two, the mountains, the city, and silence. It was certainly a "I can't believe this is my life" moment.

4. If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?

Hm, well I'm not going to cheat and say Italy. I'll be studying abroad there shortly. But I am however fascinated by South East Asia, Thailand specifically. I know a bit of the culture but not enough to formulate a description that would give it due justice. I'm hoping to teach English in the area after I graduate and backpack through greater Asia afterwards but we'll see where life takes me!

5. Where would you recommend traveling?

While of course I'd say Colombia (I'll spare you my 'media perceptions of Colombia' thesis), the best advice I can give is go where you think you'll come alive. New York, Italy, Albania if you really want. Don't be afraid to jump in and don't be afraid to go off the beaten path. A little cliche? Maybe. The best way to have the time of your life? Absolutely.
