“What people think of you is none of your business.” Jack Canfield, author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and The Success Principles (which I highly recommend) said that. And while I don’t think you should completely disregard how people feel, I think this quote exemplifies how we should feel about ourselves. We should strive to feel confidence rather than cockiness and humility rather than audacity. And more than anything, we should find our happiness from within, rather than seeking it elsewhere in people’s compliments or having it stolen with someone’s negativity.
I reached a breaking point last night. As much as I strive to genuinely portray who I am, which is indeed a happy person, sometimes the image of the “Sunny Girl” who is eternally cheery and rosy, can be overwhelming. I can’t always be that. I have to be me. And while I will always have an optimism for happiness, it’s okay to have times when it will merely be an optimism rather than a reality.
I’m writing this morning in a much better place than I was last night. Thanks to two amazing friends, they have helped me see that whatever is meant to be will be in my life, and even if things do not come to fruition as I may have hoped, there is something better waiting around the bend. I have to just keep being myself; being me—because that is what I do best.
I hope that you can be you; because that is what you do best. Perhaps you feel secure in yourself, and you have a strong sense of self. I am so happy for you and I hope you hold on to that. But if you’re going through a time in your life like I am, when you’re learning something new every day and you’re trying to find a firm footing, I encourage you to relish that place as well. May we always be growing.
